rotary district 1070 conference, torquay 2008

Conference Report to District Council January 24th 2008.

This year’s 80th Conference is being held in the Riviera Centre at Torquay from the 3rd – 5th October. District Governor Elect, Iain Vernon, and the Conference Team are planning a both entertaining and informative weekend for all who will be attending. We will be commencing with the Conference Golf Competition on the Friday afternoon and Rotarian John Douglas will be organising this event at the Torquay Golf Course. Entertainment for the Friday night at the Riviera Centre is still being finalised but I can confirm that we will be having a Saturday night Gala Dinner Dance and we will have the capacity for 1000 delegates to attend. There will be the opportunity for those who would like to choose to dine in a quiet area before the dancing commences and this can be requested on the registration forms. Rotary matters and Rotary projects will be to the fore in presentations on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Registration papers have been issued to next years Presidents when they attended PETS on the 1st March. Registration fees for delegates have been agreed at the Council Meeting on 10th January at £28 per delegate. This covers all entertainment and the Conference Plenary Sessions but not, of course, your meal at the Gala Dinner Dance.

Booking accommodation has not been as easy as in previous years. As a result, this year the conference committee is not involved with booking delegate accommodation due to a restriction placed on us by the Riviera Centre which in turn allows free use of the facilities for hire. The only area in which we are involved with accommodation is at the Headquarters Hotel which is the Grand. This Hotel has now allocated us the full number of rooms originally agreed with them and, although we are unable to offer rooms to all the clubs which applied earlier, some of these applicants have been successful.  If any club is having difficulties with booking accommodation please be in touch with me.

Future conferences have now been confirmed at Eastbourne from 2nd – 4th October 2009 and at Bournemouth from 24th – 26th September 2010. I will be making visits to both venues within the next few months with Rotarian Dick Parsley and Rotarian Roger McDermott and the incoming conference manager, Rotarian Andy Roberts.

Rotarian Geof Nichols ~ District Conference Manager.

Accommodation can be booked now through the Torquay Accommodation Bureau. You can book online, too; go to www.conferencetorquay.co.uk, click on ‘accommodation’ and follow the instructions.

2007 conference report, harrogate

The sun shone down on Harrogate for a whole three days of the White Rose Conference just to prove global warming has definitely arrived, and John Idell persuaded delegates to donate to seven acres of forest to compensate as over twenty five percent of 1070 members made the journey north.

Conference has a basic programme of events each one is definitely different. Presentations on both days ranged from the light hearted to deadly serious, a mixture of joy and sadness highlighting the varying aspects of Rotary.

The personal accounts of Life after Cancer described  by Dr Sheila Hughes and that of Gloria Hunniford reminded all that they have been affected at some time.

The sobering pictures of Water Aid and Shelter Box (the vision of one man realised) showed that we are so fortunate, and the presentation of young people (particularly Interact, our future members) impressed us with their enthusiasm and told us of the need for peace throughout the world.

Geof Nichols could not have known that England would be overwhelming Australia as husbands tried to spend Saturday afternoon near a bar or television shop rather than the local attractions, but perhaps he did?

The late start for the Ball allowed some to enjoy France beat New Zealand before blowing a fortune at the Casino. You do have to do some serious training for two very late nights and early starts for a conference that commenced with a splendid concert by ‘Beyond the Barricades’.

“Thou missed a rite good do”.
