With the understanding of the importance to health and wellbeing, many young people are now very interested in cooking and these days, cook well. Additionally, recent government initiatives to bring cookery back into the mainstream school curriculum and the Jamie Oliver “Healthy Eating” promotion have added increasing status to the subject.

The RIBI Young Chef Competition fits perfectly into the prevailing mood and offers students an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate their acquired knowledge and skills. From modest beginnings in 1998, the District Competition has continued to grow in popularity and now makes provision for a District Final that will accommodate a total of 32 competitors from the North and South of District 1070.

As previously, the competition is in 4 stages. The winners go forward at each level to the next stage of the competition. Entrants prepare a two course meal in stage 1 and a three course meal in stages 2 – 4

The Rotary International Young Chef District 1070 Finals were held at Leicester on 21st January 2012 and Huntingdon on 28th January 2012. Once again, the standard of entries was extremely high, with all competitors working confidently to produce tasty and very professional 3 course meals. The age range varied from 11-17, and in the Leicester competition, the 1st and 3rd prizes were won by competitors in school years 7-9 (age 11-14).

The District Final North held at the Samworth Enterprise Academy in Leicester, was won by Lydia Swift representing Melton Mowbray Belvoir Rotary Club.
Lydia’s menu was:

  • Curried parsnip & apple soup
  • Filo pork with apricot stuffing and ratatouille
  • Lime cheesecake cream on a biscuit base.

2nd place was awarded to Jana-Liss Cooper supported by Oadby Launde Rotary Club with 3rd prize going to Isobel Ormerod, aged only 11, as the entrant from Hinckley & Bosworth Rotary Club.

At the Huntingdon District Final South held at Hinchingbrooke School, the winner was Ben Newlyn representing Towcester Rotary Club. Ben’s menu was:

  • Thai pea soup
  • Stuffed pork fillet with pear and perry sauce with roast sweet potato and asparagus tips with asparagus puree
  • Chocolate Soufflē.

In 2nd place was Lucy Gregory supported by Northampton West Rotary Club, with 3rd prize presented to Jodie Vye entered by Market Harborough Rotary Club.

In addition, special merit awards were given to Jessica Newton (RC Leicester de Montfort) and David Shire (RC Holbeach).

Lydia and Ben will be proceeding to the next round of the Young Chef competition, the Regional Final in Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 24th March 2012.

The very experienced judges were Roger Sanderson, Simon Benning, Mick Gunney and Anne Crabtree, who were pleased to give tips and hints to the entrants after both of the competitions.

The District Finals were once more sponsored by Dickinson and Morris Pork Pies. They kindly paid for the entrants’ food expenses and brought a selection of pork pies to the Leicester competition. District 1070 is very grateful to Dickinson and Morris for their continued support of this very worthwhile youth competition.
