Excellent Results in Youth Speaks Competition


We were treated to a veritable feast of young talent last year throughout the Youth Speaks competition. Thirty seven teams took part in the semi-finals at Grantham, Bedford and Leicester.

The range of subjects chosen and researched by the teams threw out some challenges to the audience including 'Attitudes to Reading', 'The effects of the Recession', 'Do footballers get paid too much?' – even 'Do men have a future?

An opportunity for young people to develop the ability to speak on a public platform, carry out research and formulate ideas, improve self-confidence and presentation skills, and work as a team.

Pupils from Kimbolton School.

 

Age groups:

Intermediate: Usually school years 7 to 9.  Dates of birth between 01/09/1997-31/08/2000

Senior: Usually school years 10 to 13.  Dates of birth 01/09/1993-31/08/1997

 

Teams of 3:

Chairperson, Speaker and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks

 

Eligibility:

Young people who are in full time education representing schools, colleges or youth groups.

Involve schools:

June to September

Club Competition:

A local competition organised by individual clubs or groups of clubs. Club competition should be held at a suitable venue before Christmas.

District Semi Finals:

£10 per team.

n.b. This year's deadline for entries is Friday 16th December.

Intermediate semi-finals:

 

Tuesday 17th January, Melton Vale Post 16 Centre
Wednesday 18th January, Northampton High School for Girls
Thursday 19th January, Leicester Grammar School

 


Seniors semi-finals:

Tuesday 24th January, Melton Vale Post 16 Centre
Wednesday 25th January, Northampton High School for Girls 

Thursday 26th January, Leicester Grammar School

Winners and runners up go to the District Final.

District Final: Wednesday 29th February, Kimbolton School

Regional Final: Sunday 25th March in Scarborough

RIBI Final: Saturday 28th April, Glyndwr University,Wrexham

 

Basic Format

Subject chosen by the entrants. Chairperson speaks for 2 minutes, Speaker speaks for 6 minutes, Proposer of the Vote of Thanks speaks for 2 minutes.

Teams may wish to link their presentations to the theme of “Olympic Dreams” or “Olympic Spirit.”  Please note this is a theme and not a title and is not compulsory

Rules

 

Competitions are judged by 3 adjudicators who work to a set marking system.  It is, therefore, essential that all competitors know the rules. These and other support material are available on this page
