District 1070 Technology Tournament.

Rotary Technology Tournament

The challenge is for teams of 4 to design, construct and test an artefact to a specified criteria.  No instructions are given until the start of the competition.  The event takes place during school time.  A workshop or large indoor space and suitable tables / work benches are needed.  The minimum number of teams is 4.  The maximum depends on the space available.

The Project aims to stimulate and develop:

Team Working
Communication
Problem Solving
Practical Skills

A different unseen project is set by Rotary each year, e.g.

Coin sorter
Flashing Light
Self-propelled vehicle
Pipe Crawler

The Materials/Parts such as strips of wood, dowel, paper clips, tape, wire, cardboard, glue, etc are specified and provided by Rotary

The tools are also specified and schools are asked to take them along.

Everything is done in one school day:
MORNING: Design, Construct, Test, Modify, Retest
LUNCH
AFTERNOON: Final Competitive Test

Rotarians organise the event using a comprehensive guide provided by the task setters.  The task varies from year to year and is kept confidential until the day in order to provide a level playing field for all competitors.  Copies of the 2010-11 task can now be obtained from the District co-ordinators.

Teachers can enjoy watching their students or take part themselves but may not help their teams!

All teams attempt the same task with 3 levels of difficulty
Basic (usually up to Year 9)
Intermediate (usually up to Year 11)
Senior (Usually Years 12 and 13)

Support can be arranged to enable groups of less able students to take part.

Across Great Britain and Ireland literally tens of thousands of students take part usually in a week at the end of March.
