Health & Safety - An Overview

As your District Health and Safety Officer, I am available to help your Club meet its requirements for health and safety matters. Should there be any areas outside the scope of my own particular health and safety expertise, then we have contacts within R.I.B.I. who can advise further.

Rotary International in Britain & Ireland (RIBI) has published a Health and Safety Policy that includes guidance for Clubs on adopting their own policy and on carrying out Risk Assessments for its activities.

RIBI has also published a Protection Policy and we are urged to carry out Risk Assessments of any project involving children, disabled or elderly persons.

Guidance and copies of the policies for both the above mentioned areas are available to download from the RIBI website, www.ribi.org Click onto Clubs, then Resource Manuals for Clubs.

Questions that each Rotary Club member should be asking are:-

• Do we have a Club Health and Safety Policy, and has it been reviewed and issued in the last year?

• Have we undertaken Risk Assessments for situations such as:-

• Emergency procedures including fire safety and evacuation

• Disability discrimination

• Use of temporary barriers and structures

• Inflatable bouncing devices and fun fair rides

• Medical / first aid arrangements

• Crowd profiling and vehicle control

• Firework displays

• Environmental issues

• Food provision, cooking and handling

• Communications and information signs

• Noise nuisance

• Marshalling and lost persons

• Use of LPG bottles / propane / butane / fuel
